Arabic is such a beautiful language, I regret that I wasted about 7 years of learning the language and never taking it seriously. I was a child, no one told me why I needed to learn the language other than “It’s the language of Quran!” Yes, it is. But there was too much emphasis on examinations and insistence that learning was a responsibility (rather than, you know - learning) that often the purpose of language was dismissed.

A language is not merely a mean of communication. Tradition and culture certainly were embedded closely to a particular language. Taking my native language, Malay as an example. Albeit from a small continent of influence, the cultures of each demographic group varies and are interestingly distinctive. Hence, learning of the language also constitutes an understanding of the differences of each culture that adheres to the main and broad idea of this categorization of one language. Arabic, likewise is a language that extends to a wider region of influence and hence carries a significant wealth of culture with it. Maybe, if my teachers had approached me, or intrigued me into understanding that learning the formal Arabic is the first step to understand these cultures- I might have an interest to be good at it.

But I was 7. It was religious classes, 3 p.m. every day after school hours. We had exams and the purpose of studying was to pass these examinations. Arabic was to know the grammar, very little attention was given to communicating in Arabic too, if I can remember correctly.

I am certainly not sure if I want to pick up the language again, I’d be able to do so. But I am interested, given that right now I have more the reason to know the language. I have the basics (I can read Arabic letters) so if it might help. Other than Arabic, I’m very certain that I want to pick up some German and Mandarin too.

I feel the same way! And I went to a full-time Madrasah.

All my life I was told that Arabic is a beautiful language but I was never shown how or why it is. My parents & teachers telling me that “it is so” just doesn’t cut it for me.

I began to realize its beauty at 15. By then, I had a major exam the following year and my Arabic was still primary school level. I’m pretty sure if I start talking to an Arab, he/she would be rofl-ing.

I did ok for my exams, but I could have done so much better if only I had understood the majesty of the language.

Thankfully, these days you can find great resources online to help you learn Arabic. Whether it’s
1) Video (i.e. Learn Arabic with Maha)
2) actual interaction/communication with Arabs who are willing to help you in exchange you teach a language they wish to learn such as English (i.e. Livemocha)
3) Phone apps (i.e. ArabicPod101)
etc

To me, the best way to discover the beauty of the Arabic language is through the words of God. Bro Nouman Ali Khan (from Bayyinah Insitute) does an excellent job at explaining and elaborating on the verses in the Quran. You can find his free podcast here.

Lastly, I must say that listening to The Narcycist & Omar Offendum is a huge motivation for me :)

How does one change the minds of others about oneself?

The truth is, they’re not wrong to think what they think because I had at some point in my life made them think that way.

Yes, I was rude.

Yes, I was mean.

Yes, I intended to hurt.

But…

That’s not who I am. Not who I truly am.

It’s like after 26 years of ‘playing dead’, my soul is finally finally staking its claim.

“I’m here! I promise you I’m here!” it yells.
